FREETOWN, Mass.—Freetown officials plan to name the gym at the town’s elementary school in honor of a local sailor who died in Iraq.

Principal Robert Frizelle presented the idea of naming the gym after Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyler Trahan to the school committee, which unanimously agreed. Trahan once attended Freetown Elementary School.

Trahan’s father, Jean Pierre Trahan, told The Standard-Times of New Bedford that it’s an appropriate tribute given his son’s love of sports.

Trahan was killed by a roadside bomb in Fallujah, Iraq, in April while working with a Navy Seal bomb disposal team. He was two days short of his 23rd birthday.

Trahan was a 2004 graduate of Old Colony Regional Vocational-Technical High School and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy before joining the Navy.
