East Providence schools sue for more money

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The school district in East Providence has sued the city government for more money, citing a $3 million budget deficit.
The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court, alleges that the school district’s $73 million budget is insufficient. East Providence is the third school district this year to file lawsuits against municipal authorities because of funding disputes.
Cranston schools lost their lawsuit, while school authorities in West Warwick are trying to settle out of court.
East Providence Superintendent Mario Cirillo said more lawsuits are probably coming. The state has reduced school funding, while a recent law limits how much money local governments can raise through property taxes.
