Community leaders aim to combat dropout rate

In the South Coast area of Massachusetts, the dropout rate tops the agenda.

It’s gone from chronic to crisis level, and leaders say nothing will improve in the old mill towns until the undereducated population learns the connection between diplomas and dollars.

The South Coast Development Partnership and the UMass Urban Initiative have a plan to turn things around.

The proposals include creation of a dropout early warning system for children and expanding the mentoring partnership program.
