Children back in school after gas odor evacuation

CUMBERLAND, R.I.—Children were evacuated from a Rhode Island elementary school for about an hour and a half after teachers and staff noticed the smell of gas.
Cumberland schools Superintendent Donna Morelle says the children were evacuated from Garvin Elementary School around 11:30 a.m. Thursday and walked to a nearby hall while fire crews and National Grid looked for a leak.
National Grid spokeswoman Deborah Drew says crews didn’t find a leak, although they did find damage to a boiler pilot light that was repaired.
Morelle says parents were told of the problem through a notification system.
