MASHANTUCKET, Conn.—Foxwoods Resort Casino’s gaming chips are going high-tech.

Officials at the entertainment complex are phasing out the old chips and replacing them with new discs, each embedded with radio frequency computer chips and bearing individual serial numbers.

They say that helps the casino keep tabs on the chips and cut back on counterfeiting.

However, people holding any of the 49 different sets of older chips still in circulation will have to cash them in before Jan. 31.

Authorities have not disclosed the value of the older chips still in circulation, but have called the total substantial.
