PROVIDENCE— A North Providence woman was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison in the death of her newborn daughter.

Julie Robat was convicted in April of second-degree murder in the death of her baby, Angelica, who was found inside a plastic bag inside her home in October 2006.

Prosecutors believe Robat smothered the baby and tried to hide the bagged body in the basement laundry room of her family’s home.

Robat’s lawyer said at trial that she passed out right before delivering the baby and that the infant died immediately after birth from a medical problem involving the placenta.

Superior Court Judge Robert Krause called Robat responsible for the baby’s death. The 45-year sentence requires Robat to spend 25 years at the state prison and the remainder on probation.
