NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.—A North Kingstown woman accused of strangling her 8-year-old daughter in her bed was ordered held without bail Thursday after being arraigned on one count of murder.
Kimberly Fry, 36, did not enter a plea in the killing of her daughter, Camden, at her arraignment in a cell block at the Washington County Courthouse.
Police wouldn’t comment on a motive.
Authorities believe Fry strangled her daughter on Monday.
The police were called the following day after the girl’s father found the child unresponsive in bed.
“He was devastated from the phone call,“ said North Kingstown Police Chief Edward Charboneau. “I’m sure there’s family with him now.“
Police said the father last saw his daughter alive at about 9:45 p.m. on Monday and presumed that she was sleeping. It is unknown if the father was home at the time of the incident.
On Wednesday, the state’s medical examiner determined the cause of death as manual strangulation, and police issued an arrest warrant for Fry.
“The allegations that are lodged are appropriate against the mother who is responsible for nurturing and taking care of a child and that child’s life was extinguished,“ said Attorney General Patrick Lynch.
Fry’s attorneys, C. Leonard O’Brien and Lise Gescheidt, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
A bail hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20.
Marilyn Zoppa, who taught Camden in the first grade at Fishing Cove Elementary School, said the mother and daughter were very close. Kimberly Fry frequently helped out in the class and was dedicated to her daughter, Zoppa said.
“I cannot picture that in a million years. This mother devoted her life to that child,“ she said.
Zoppa remembered the girl as sweet and very loving, and described Kimberly Fry as being very close to her daughter.
“She was very overprotective of her,“ Zoppa said. “She would do anything for her.“
In a Fishing Cove Elementary School newsletter from December 2007, Camden wrote: “I am thankful for my family. I am thankful for my webkins. I am thankful for my dog. I am thankful for my friends.“

That poor, poor baby. May her soul rest in peace.
If the mom is guilty, I hope one of her fellow inmates shows her exactly the terror her daughter felt. Then she can go straight to He!! NO excuse!
So sad. God bless that poor little child.
tired of RI
I am sorry but there are NO EXCUSES in this case. If her husband cheated he has parts of his body that can be squeezed until he wished he was dead or was dead. Meds….I don’t know I think someone would have picked up on her acting differently. Maybe she was just a selfish evil b@(% that was tired of playing the part of the good mommy.Or maybe we will get more details and find that it wasn’t her at all. No matter who did this they should suffer an equel punishment. I think they should bring back “stoning” people to death for crimes against children. It is just too sad to excuse.
Mike 464 I am not yelling….
true true, however you do know that she will get her hands slapped cause “ insanity”
Newport if you read many of my other comments you will see I don’t make or accept excuses. This is the 1st time I said maybe. I really don’t believe in excuses but this just seems out of line for a mother who is quoted as being “devoted”. My only other thought is maybe dad cheated and this was the way mom is getting back. We may never know the real truth.
Oh god (TIREDOFRI), its people like you that make excuses. and I quote “ I don’t like to use excuses but maybe the meds she is on should not have been mixed” So sad that this poor excuse of a mother will use this as her defense to get a slap on the wrist by the very same courts who are supposed to protect a 9 year old. I find it so sad that anyone who kills a child is even allowed to breath the same air I do. She is a drain and waste on our socitey and if the North Kingstown police would just let me “talk with her” I will be more than glad to show her how it feels to have someones hands squeezing the life out. Shame on RI for no death penalty.
how sad…. what would make a person do this to an eight year old child? that is not an easy task to strangle someone with your bare hands? I don’t understand how this could have happened. RIP Camden…...
That is absoluety gut wrenching. I have a 9 year old daughter myself and that last paragraph hurts to read.
Wow. If what we are reading is true and this mom was close with her daughter, I think they should do some kind of test. I don’t like to use excuses but maybe the meds she is on should not have been mixed. Very Very sad
