A Taiwanese television network broadcast dramatic pictures as flood waters from Typhoon Morakot toppled an entire hotel building.
Authorities said they believe the hotel had been evacuated before it collapsed.
It came a day after Typhoon Morakot lashed Taiwan with torrential rains that caused the worst flooding on the island in 50 years.
The typhoon continued to move towards China, forcing nearly 1 million people to evacuate their homes for higher ground.
People in Shanghai prepared for the storm’s arrival.
Authorities closed the water lock in the Suzhou River to ships and electronic signs warned ships to stay away.
Ships already in the harbor were tightly secured.
