Utility seeks electricity rate hike in R.I.
Published: June 1, 2009
PROVIDENCE—National Grid is asking Rhode Island regulators for a distribution rate increase that could hike a typical residential electric bill by more than 11 percent.
If approved, the new rates would take effect Jan. 1.
National Grid said Monday it was seeking a 35 percent increase in distribution rates, which account for about one quarter of the typical electric bill for residential customers.
The increase would be smaller for commercial and industrial customers.
A spokesman for the utility said while the timing was unfortunate, the request was being now because a five-year freeze in the distribution rate will soon expire.
National Grid has about 424,000 residential customers in Rhode Island.

A constructive idea -
Take all the convicted child sex offenders running rampant in RI (you can find them easily here: http://www.paroleboard.ri.gov/sexoffender/olist/search.php )
and force them to run on huge wheels which generate electricity for the state , in return for free housing in an enclosed location.
That way we kill 2 birds with one stone.
thats right! I forgot the explosions.
Last time there was a story about a house explosion due to gas, I had smelled gas in our house so called to have them check it out. They sent this guy with such a pissy attitude like he had to go so far out of his way.
If they checked their lines and made sure things were up to date and correct, we wouldnt see so many house explosions in the news.
They are too big and they dont care.
RI should check them, or we should out the current leadership.
Is there anything good about
National Grid?
It seems like all they do is take over the small electric companies, raise the rates, have major outages, and offer services many of us don’t want such as gas. No thanks. Blow up your own houses when you make a mistake, not mine. I’m reading about that every week even for people who don’t have gas installed, but the street does.
National Grid - Keep away from my town. Our rates are affordable and we don’t want the problems you cause.
So many people are moving out of the State National Grid is not getting as much money every month .
So they raise there rates !
Plus the poor who can’t afford to pay there heat or electric are not paying there bills !
The General assembly has also been trying to pass a bill to ad an extra fee on our electric and Gas bills to pay for those who can’t afford to pay there bills , the general assembly does not work for you if you have a job .
If you can afford to look at leaving the State i myself have been looking at North Carolina .
This State is one big money grab for the cause Cause they want your Money !
Bob Cumberland
how about tax breaks for solar panels?
HERE ARE THE HEADLINES FROM LAST YEARS RATE HIKE FROM PROJO:
Sep. 30—WARWICK—The Public Utilities Commission voted unanimously yesterday to approve a 12.4-percent electric rate increase for customers of Narragansett Electric, bringing rates to their highest level in Rhode Island in at least seven years.
ANOTHER RATE INCREASE????
THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG HERE.
WE DID NOT SEE A DECREASE IN RATES WHEN OIL WENT DOWN THESE PAST FEW MONTHS!!
PLEASE URGE ALL YOUR FRIENDS/NEIGHBORS TO EMAIL THEIR OBJECTIONS TO THE PUC AND THEIR
LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES.
RHODE ISLANDERS CAN NO LONGER AFFORD WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS STATE.
EMAIL YOUR OBJECTIONS TO mary.kent@ripuc.org
THE ONLY WAY TO GET OUR STATE BACK IS TO ALL STAND TOGETHER
One other thing—how about the businesses that National Grid gives discounts to to get their business? You bet those businesses are not going to get slapped with increases! Just another example of the people getting slapped with business ‘welfare’ costs.
This is just greed. I don’t believe the people that are having a hard time paying their bill due to unemployment caused this. I bet at the end of the year they can use that as a tax write off. Face it RI is going down the tubes and our government here just does not care
Someone should check on a rumor that NG received a nice stimulus check. These rates are probably caused by people unable to pay their bills, so as usual it trickels down to the more fortunate customers that are working and ekeing out a living. I guess if the credit cards can do it so can NG.
Electrical and other utility companies used to be government regulated—until the big move was amde to let ‘competition’ in so the consumers would pay lower rates! Thank Ronnie Reagan for that bunch of ballyhoo. Now those companies just look for their increases and feed their bottom lines. Hey government—where is the so-called savings we consumers were supposed to reap from this ‘elimination of monopolies’? You politicians should have told the company big shots “no way” to their ideas and left the regulations in place.
