URI relaxes alcohol policy at sports events

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - The University of Rhode island is further relaxing rules concerning alcohol at school athletic events.

The university last month announced that it would allow alcohol at football game tailgate parties for the first time in 16 years this season.

AthLetic director Thorr Bjorn said in a statement Thursday that beer and wine will be on sale at the suite level and in the alumni room for football and basketball games beginning this weekend.

URI will also sponsor its first pick-up party for men’s and women’s basketball season ticket holders at a local bar next week.

Bjorn says the new alcohol policy will improve the game-day experience and raise revenue.

New URI President David Dooley promised to review alcohol policy when he took over this year.

PC plays basketball at the Dunk and you can purchase alcohol there.  Brown allows alcohol in conjunction with tailgating.  Many people, young and old, are capable of enjoying a drink without breaking the law.  Not everyone is a raging drunk.  Of course, those are the ones we hear about the most.  And they will be the ones that do something stupid whether there is alcohol on campus or not.  Why not just close down all bars and liquor stores within a hundred mile radius of anyone who is under age?  Or underage and stupid? Or just stupid?

What happened to URI being a dry campus.
Isn’t the off campus drinking parties enough problems without promoting drinking at school functions.  Shame on you, URI.

All in the name of money. Don’t you just love it. The heck with what happens if someone has a few too many and kills someone on the roadways.
