KINGSTON, R.I. —The Department of Health has issued a boil water advisory for the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus after two water samples taken from the Biological Sciences Center tested positive for coliform bacteria.

The university said water should be boiled for one minute and cooled before using. The school also planned to begin distributing bottled water Monday to students living on campus.

Officials said boiled or bottled water is being used for cooking and baking at dining halls, and all coffee, fountain beverage and ice machines have been shut down and drained.

URI injected chlorine into the water system Friday after the first test came back positive for fecal coliform bacteria.

URI will be providing updates both on their homepage and the storm cancellation line at 401-874-7669.
