PROVIDENCE—The unemployment rate in Rhode Island rose to 12.7 percent in July even as the national jobless rate declined.
A state survey released Friday showed that unemployment in Rhode Island crept up three-tenths of a percentage point since June. Meanwhile, the national jobless rate dropped from 9.5 percent to 9.4 percent.
Rhode Island’s unemployment rate has recently outpaced all other states except Michigan, which posted a 15 percent unemployment rate in July.
About 17,500 jobs have been lost in Rhode Island compared to the same period a year earlier, a 4 percent decrease. Roughly 72,900 residents are now looking for work.
The state gained 900 jobs since June, mostly in the ailing manufacturing and construction sectors.

The nation’s rate is not going, Obama and his henchmen are just playing funny games with the numbers.
And you people that continue to blame Carcieri are clearly delusional. There are 5 GOP members out of 75 in the General Assembly. The General Assembly just vetoes whatever Carcieri wants to do. Remember, Carcieri actually knows how to create jobs, unlike the career losers you people elect every election.
one more comment: with the national rate going down and RI rate going up I would say that it is the result of Carcieri - NOT an Obama result
a lot of this most likely has to do with the ill-timed and hard-handed crackdown on the sales tax. The owners are liable personally forever on the sales tax that is due - so why not work with the companies instead of making the police close them down? They absolutely need to pay it. But why close businesses? The owners can never avoid paying what is due. I collect about $25 per year in sales taxes. So I filed quarterly instead of monthly (which is mostly “0”). The police came and instructed me to stop selling retail. Why? not because I owed anything - but because the 2 forms out of each quarter with zero taxes were not “properly” filed. What a waste of time and resources. And yes, there are companies that did close and their employees ended up at the unemployment office!
I’m moving!
But don’t worry my fellow posters; I’ll always be coming to TURNTO10…
China, Mexico and every country that pays a buck an hr.
And STILL nothing is done.
Where, Obama are the jobs?
