EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Police with the state Department of Environmental Management said Monday that alcohol played a role in a boating accident on the Seekonk River that injured two men.

Police said a boat, driven by 37-year-old Michael Badger, of Seekonk, struck some wooden pilings near the Henderson Bridge on Sunday at about 7 p.m.

Badger and one passenger, 39-year-old Herbert Reakes, of East Providence, were taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Both were listed in serious condition.

Nearby boats helped tow the damaged 18-foot recreational boat to shore.
