PROVIDENCE—A Rhode Island state trooper, who pleaded no contest to assaulting a Providence police sergeant during a fundraiser, has resigned the Rhode Island State Police said Thursday.

Maj. Elmwood Johnson told NBC 10 Edward Stenovitch’s resignation will take effect Nov. 7.

Stenovitch broke Sgt. Bernard’s Gannon’s nose after punching him at the Providence police union hall on Sept. 5.

The hall was hosting a fundraiser for the wife of a Providence officer who died in an off-duty car crash.

The hall was serving liquor past closing time that night. As punishment, the city licensing board forbid it from serving liquor for one night.
