The US Public Interest Research Group delivered its annual toy safety report Tuesday, and said parents shopping for holiday toys should look out for hazards such as small parts, soft plastics and lead contamination.

They say toxic chemicals are still found in kids’ products despite new laws against them.

Here’s an easy way to figure out if a toy is too small for tiny tots. Consumer advocates say if the toy fits inside the tube from a toilet paper roll it should not be given to little ones.

PIRG’s Liz Hitchcock says: “Remember not all toys are tested before they hit store shelves, and the current PIRG list is not a full list. It is only a sampling of potentially unsafe toys.“

NBC 10 has both sides of this story. The Toy Industry Association responded with a statement saying parents should not be “needlessly” frightened by the report.  The statement says: “The toy industry works continuously to strengthen our rigorous testing and inspection procedures and ensure safe toys. Protecting children will always be our highest priority.“
