CHARLESTOWN, R.I.—A 17-year-old boy was rescued Tuesday night from East Beach in Charlestown after a hole he spent hours digging collapsed and buried him up to his neck.

The teen was taken by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital. NBC 10 reported that he was conscious and alert.

Police and rescue crews arrived at the beach at about 7:30 p.m.

NBC 10 reported that the teenager, who was from Connecticut, was with his family at the beach, when he started to dig a hole in the sand. The hole ended up being between six to eight feet deep.

At some point, the boy got into the hole, and the sand collapsed on top of him.

The boy was trapped in the hole for about two and a half hours, before crews were able to free him.

Witnesses told NBC 10 that they could only see the boy’s hat and some fingers, but that he was still breathing.

Enough of the political B!#$% Slapping!  When did an article about a kid getting stuck in a hole turn into a political war of words, Dems vs. Reps.  You need to grow up and stop the bickering!!  As for the article, first the Lifeguards at East beach work until 6pm, they were gone when the incident happened.  Second, as a lifeguard with 20 years under my belt and worked for Charlestown years ago, I would never let a kid dig a hole that deep on my shift.  Third, People do dumb things.  If you see someone doing something dumb, say or do something before it’s too late.  Fourth, maybe the state, town and private beaches should post BIG signs with this picture of this kid stuck in the sand on them, instead of just words.  It may get people’s attention…‘Cause really who has time to read signs??

After all the damage that George Bush did to this country, how can anyone even think about blaming a Democrat for ANYTHING!

Flag Comment Posted by pollynana on August 27, 2009 at 9:59 am

The deficit that Bush left was less than one-twelfth that stands today.  Can’t blame Bush ... face facts.  This kid is simply trying to dig himselt out of the hold Democrats have thrust us all into.

Kennethknk:  Sorry, you’re right.  It should have been that the poor kid was trying to dig out of the mess the Dems have gotten us into.  That makes more sense.

I agree they should post a sign. It should read: “Call Dig Safe before digging” -or- “Beware of holes dug but not filled back in, by out of state Democrats”

Typical Republican comment Pollynana but I think he was digging out of the whole the Republicans put us in the last eight years. And when the Republicans went into office they had 300 billion dollar surplus and left Obama a 2 trillion dollar defecit great job Republicans thats one to brag about.
But I hope the stupid kid is alright too.

This is not the first time this has happed.  It should not be allowed, when a lifeguard see’s this it should be stopped. They should maybe post some signs.
