Swain case postponed to February

CRANSTON, R.I.—The arraignment of a former Jamestown Town Council member charged with killing his wife while scuba diving in the British Virgin Islands has been postponed until next year.

David Swain made a brief court appearance Monday on the island of Tortola in the murder of his wife, Shelley Tyre, during a 1999 vacation.

The BVI Beacon reported that Swain’s lawyer asked for more time to raise money for the defense.  The case was rescheduled for February.

Tyre’s drowning death was originally ruled an accident by British Virgin Island officials. But a 2006 Rhode Island civil trial found Swain responsible, and island officials decided earlier this year to charge Swain with murder.
