PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Four Portsmouth High School students have been charged with stealing a cash box containing $1,400 in ticket receipts from the school play.

Police tell The Newport Daily News that 18-year-old Stephen Sullivan, a 16-year-old girl, a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy are charged with larceny of more than $500.

The theft occurred Friday during a production of “A Streetcar Named Desire.“ The arrests were made Saturday after another student told police the suspects had been hanging around the cash
box shortly before it went missing.

The suspects were released pending further legal proceedings.

About $1,100 has been recovered.

Principal Robert Littlefield says the students have been suspended 10 days and are expected to repay the remaining $300.
