Student holds bake sale to pay debt

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. A North Kingstown high school student is doing her part to help pay off the national debt.

Katherine Young, 16, was assigned a project for her civics class to find a social issue in this country, then do something about it.

What she focused on was the country’s $12 trillion national debt. The student decided to put her money where her mouth is, and held a bake sale at school on Wednesday.
She completely sold out of baked goods in just a 12 minutes and collected about $50.

Young says she knows this will not make a difference but said she just wanted to raise awareness about the debt.

It’s very important that we are financially literate as everyone makes financial decisions. Many students today are facing debt trouble and that’s what they need to learn on, how they will be able to get beyond such circumstance. The power to take control over your personal finance situation is completely within your grasp, and there is far more than enough financial education and debt education is out there.  For instance, you don’t spend more than you earn, and you don’t spend more than a third of your income on housing.  You should be able to stick at least 10% or more of your earnings into savings every time you are paid.  They seem harder than they actually are, and you don’t need to worry about getting payday loans or more credit cards, all you have to do is take charge and start making things work to your advantage.
