Stranded pilot whale dies in Mass.

BARNSTABLE, Mass.—The Cape Cod Stranding Network says a 30-foot-long female pilot whale has died after getting stuck on a beach in Barnstable.
The whale died Saturday despite attempts by rescuers to save it.
Jane LaRocque of the Stranding Newtork says it was first seen in the morning about 100 yards off a beach near Seaview Avenue. The whale appeared to be in good health at the time.
Volunteers examined the whale, tagged it and towed it to deeper waters. But it drifted with the tide and stranded on a beach near the Wianno Club.
Experts at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are expected to perform a necropsy Sunday.
