State police: Fatal crashes in ‘09 top last year’s total
Published: November 6, 2009
LINCOLN, R.I.—The Rhode Island State Police on Friday urged motorists to wear a seatbelt and pay attention while they are driving as the holiday season approaches.
According to state police, there have been more fatal accidents this year than in all of 2008.
State police said there have been 57 fatal car crashes this year. There were also 10 pedestrian deaths on state roadways. In 2008, they counted 53 fatal accidents and 12 pedestrian deaths.
State police said speeding, texting while driving and driving under the influence of alcohol were all factors.
“We’re urge all motorists to slow down, be attentive, be patient, courteous and wear your seatbelts. By practicing these simple guidelines, we can assist in reducing needless crashes and senseless deaths on our roadways,“ said Col. Brendan Doherty of the Rhode Island State Police.

They may be up this year, but last year they were way down from the year before. The one way to keep them going down is to get the idiots using cell phones for all kinds of things while driving off the road. Then those totals would come WAY down.
