Sky trio: Jupiter, Venus, moon come together

WASHINGTON—On a holiday weekend full of gatherings, the three brightest objects in the night sky—Venus, Jupiter and a crescent moon—came together for a rare spectacle.

A senior editor at Sky and Telescope magazine said on Sunday and Monday nights, Venus and Jupiter were separated in the sky only by about the width of a finger held out at arm’s length.

On Monday night, they were joined by a crescent moon right next to them, forming what looked to some like a frowning face.

The lineup was visible even without a telescope or binoculars to anyone looking toward the southwestern sky around twilight.

It won’t happen like this again until Nov, 18, 2052.
