RI unemployment rate rises to 13 percent

PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island’s unemployment rate climbed to 13 percent last month as widespread job losses continued in the accommodation and food service industry and other sectors, according to state statistics released Friday.

The state unemployment rate has leaped 4.5 percentage points since last year and was well above the national unemployment rate of 9.8 percent.

About 1,000 jobs were lost during September in the accommodation and food services sectors, in part because of worse-than-normal losses in the restaurant industry. The professional and business service sector lost 700 jobs, while hard-pressed manufacturers cut 600 positions.

Government employers hired 1,100 people, mostly educators, at the start of the school year. But state officials believe many of those workers were laid off over the summer because of school budget deficits, then rehired when conditions improved.

You see those new highways? that’s where the stimulus monet went instead of creating jobs. Even school budget was cut big time and my disabled son goes to school on summer only for 3 days a week. What a shame! they also took off monitoring nurses off the handicapped buses. this state is going downhill very fast.

Blame this party.  Blame that party.  Blame blaming.  Blame anybody!

Well, if you want to point fingers. Blame the Republicans who started the whole big business deregulation crap—especially Ronnie Reagan.  That little piece of legislation allowed tbusiness to run wild.

Next, blame the Democrats—with NAFTA—which was Clinton’s doing.  Big business can now outsource the jobs and leave American workers with no jobs—yey charge outrageous prices for the junk that now floods our markets.

How about the banking and financial industries—who, with their loans and lines of credit allowed big business to expand their grip on America’s throat.  Look at Wal-Mart.  Importing junk from China and selling it for less.  Problem is that it isn’t even worth the prices they charge—and the big shots of that company are getting richer on the backs of their enployees—who are told to apply for medical from the state if they want medical.

Now, look at—yourselves!  You go and buy that Chinese junk, exporting our gross national product to overseas.  Is it any wonder this country is in debt up to its eyeballs?????

Enough with the unemployement.  If you truly are looking for work send a resume to me chughes@ft.newyorklife.com.  I am looking for people who truly want to go back to work.  Training, benefits and most of all an opportunity

To Freak1:  I have not worked in this state for the last 15 years.  Right before the elections, the same ole good guys on the hill will go to all the nursing homes and elderly homes and buy them a chicken dinner.  And they will cow-tow to the unions and promise them the moon and nothing will change.  Sorry to be so negative but….that’s all folks.

Come On RI, it is time to vote the old baggage that is sucking the life out of this state, out of the general assembly. There is a new party in town, and since we have had no luck with either the democratic or republican (barely existent) party in this state, don’t you think it is worth looking at??  I am not affiliated with the new party in any way, but I can tell you, when they announce their candidates, I will really, really listen to what they have to say.  The political landscape has to change in this state, or we are doomed.  It is up to us, the voters, to make the change. We need a Clean Sweep, get rid of all of the General Assembly as it stands now.  They have done nothing through out this entire financial crisis but hide under their desk and wet their pants and leave the Governor as the front man. The Governor cannot run again, so we have an opportunity to CHANGE our entire state’s political landscape!!  Stop just pulling a lever in the voting booth, use your own minds and think!  Don’t listen to your mommies and daddies, teachers, or your babysitters (unions) , look at where that has already gotten us.  We have the 4th highest tax rate in the entire country.  That should be enough to open your eyes.  If you just continue vote the same old same old, you should not vote at all.  You are doing a disservice to the rest of the tax payers of this state.
Patrick Lynch and Frank Caprio will most likely be running for Governor, both are part of the old cronies network that has strangled the life out of this state, don’t be that stupid to vote for either of these guys.  Lincoln Chafee is just plain dumb.
Make a difference this year, vote with your OWN mind, vote responsibly, don’t be a pansy and vote how you are told.

Way to go Rhode Island! Pretty soon, we’ll be ahead of Michigan and we don’t have motor vehicle assembly plants to blame. Let’s just keep on conducting business as usual instead of trying to get on the same page to make some much needed changes in the way business is done. Corporate income tax is driving businesses elsewhere but the ignorant Dems that are in power in the General Assembly just don’t get it; they would rather keep pointing the finger at the governor so that their constituents don’t catch on and vote them out of office (which is long overdue for the vast majority of them)!
