R.I. regulators say no to hearing on dog racing

PROVIDENCE—State regulators have turned down a request from Rhode Island greyhound owners for a hearing on the Twin River gambling parlor’s decision to suspend dog racing.

The Rhode Island Greyhound Owners Association says 225 workers would be affected and 1,200 greyhounds would be left “in limbo” if the park ends racing.

Twin River said it was suspending races on May 31 to prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing. But state regulators told Twin River it had to keep the track open until August because state law requires it to offer 125 days of racing.

The dog owners asked for a hearing with the Department of Business Regulation. The Providence Journal reports that the DBR rejected the meeting on Thursday, saying the owners don’t have legal standing.
