RI police to step up drunken driving patrols
Published: July 3, 2009
PROVIDENCE,—Rhode Island State Police say they’ll be on the lookout for drunken drivers during the July Fourth weekend.
The police say they’ll have extra patrols targeting speeders, seat belt violators, aggressive drivers and motorists who appear drunk.
They say the July Fourth weekend is the second deadliest holiday period nationwide, behind the New Year’s Day holiday.
The police are asking people to dial 911 or “star 77” on their cell phones to report a suspected drunken driver.

Smitty why don’t you run for office and change the motor vehicle laws of the state. The laws are there for reasons to keep order and safety of others and yourself on the road. If you are afraid of getting a ticket for talking to your kids while driving it shows that you should not be driving in the first place. It amazes me how many people feel it is ok to drink and drive. Yes I drink but I don’t drive at all. There is this funny thing called a cab that I’ve been known to use or a designated driver. They both work well. Then the only worry I have is about the idiots on the road like you who apparently feel the laws are a joke and cops are just there to give tickets to “good people”. Maybe they are, that is their job. Least were not seeing them sitting at home on the clock like Providence Public work employees.
Say what you like—I happen to agree that there are drivers out there that should be stopped and taken away. Its the others that just happen to make a mistake that will ALSO be pulled over and ticketed FOR THE LEAST LITTLE THING that I am talking about.
You tell me to grow up—you take off your rose colored glasses that allow you to see only what you want to. The cops will be writing tickets for the least little things—not only drunks or aggressive drivers.
Smitty, I guess you haven’t have the experience of cutting a lifeless body of an innocent victim from a crumpled mass or gathered remains of another victim that were expelled from a car that was wrapped around a pole after being sideswiped by a drunken driver. Or have the duty of notifying a family that their teenage child will never come home again. Might I suggest that you think before you type. DRUNK DRIVING KILLS….. period.
Are you kidding! What are you talking about? People like you, who assume everything done by law enforcement is a money maker need to get over it. What is it you’d like the police to do…ignore every car that crosses the line? What if the one they don’t stop ends up hitting you? I assume that then you’d be all over the police for not stopping them. People like you and your mentality can’t be taken seriously. Grow up.
Another money grab by the state of RI. Drunk driving patrols? Just watch. If you’re a little too far over or if your attention wavers for a second and you cross a line—you’ll be tagged by the cops. If you’re driving a little irratically—say your talking to your kids—you’ll be stopped. And so on…..
This is just another excuse to issue tickets to get more income from the motorists paying fines for….not much at all.
