TIVERTON, R.I.—A horse in Tiverton who tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis has been euthanized.

State environmental officials say the 2-year-old animal had been displaying neurological problems consistent with EEE and had not been properly vaccinated against the illness.

The positive test result was confirmed late Thursday.

The state says the infected horse does not pose a threat to humans.

Horse owners are being urged to use mosquito repellents on their animals and stable their horses indoor at dawn and dusk. And all residents are being advised to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds
and protect themselves against bites.

Horses suffering from viral encephalitis can display depression, stumbling, muscle twitching and partial paralysis.

The state will set additional mosquito traps in Tiverton and Little Compton.
