PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island health authorities are recommending closing five beaches because of unacceptable levels of bacteria in the water.
The five beaches targeted for closure Wednesday are Scarborough State Beach North and Scarborough State Beach South, both in Narragansett; Atlantic Beach Club Beach in Middletown; Fort Adams State Park in Newport; and Camp Grosvenor in North Kingstown.
The state health department said it would continue to monitor the beaches and would recommend when they should be open again.
