RI boy’s wheelchair stolen

PROVIDENCE—A Providence mother is asking for the person who stole her 3-year-old special need son’s wheelchair to return it, no questions asked.

Latarcia Bonds says that every day she brings the $2,800 wheelchair to the sidewalk in front of the family’s home for her son’s ride to school. Then she brings down her son, D’Mauri, separately.

The other day, in the few minutes she left the wheelchair unattended, it disappeared.

Bonds says D’Mauri has special needs and can’t talk or walk on his own and that her insurance won’t pay for a new chair. She told The Associated Press on Thursday that she’s had to pay someone $10 a day to take D’Mauri to school since she doesn’t own a car.

She says she has reported the theft to police.

I hope something good comes out of this for this woman….Hope she gets a better apartment with a ramp and a new wheelchair for her kid sometimes things even though unfortunate things like this are blessings in disguise..I really hope this is the case here.

To the people with the negative comments about this woman I had a friend growing up whose brother was in a wheel chair and his mother had to do the same thing they lived on the second floor with no ramp, it was a project to go anywhere.  Have a heart, she didn’t leave it out there to get stolen she was doing what she had to do.  I hope you never end up in a wheelchair.

that was a nice gesture celeste, but not necessary.  I build custom chairs and it would be my pleasure to help these folks out…

My son is in crutches. I would like to think I or he could leave them anywhere safely.

Anyone who just looks like they might take them will get… well let’s just say they may need a pair when it’s over…

Mysteria1, agree with you 100%!!  I have a niece that will never walk or talk and she and her wheelchair need to be moved separately for both safety and the fact that the chair alone weighs quite a bit.  Joe, you obviously have no idea what it is like to have a child with a disability, nor the effort and equipment it takes to give this child anything resembling a “normal” life.  Also, if this were 1909, this child would probably been shipped off to an instituiton somewhere never to have been seen again…..in some respects we’ve gotten a lot better.  But after reading this incredibly sad story, its also pretty clear that in some ways we’ve gotten worse….  I hope this little boy gets his chair back.  sledge_hammer, I’ll make a donation to you to help with this if need be…

Having taken care of special needs people (children and adults) and knowing many family members who take care of special needs people, I know how difficult things can be. I credit this woman for doing the absolute best that she can. She did everything right. She did not put her son in danger by trying to take him down a narrow winding staircase and risk falling with him in his chair. She put the chair as close to the house as possible so when she walked outside with him in her arms she could place him in his chair, the same chair that she leaves outside when she carries him back up after a long day of work. She carries him daily up and down those stairs to go to school, to go to the store or just to get him out of the house. Anyone of you with negative comments towards this woman need to just SHUT UP. Until you have walked a mile in this woman’s shoes then keep your negative snide comments to yourself. I didn’t hear her say she has any help from anyone. She does all of this by herself.
Joe its 2009 when we all know how tough life can be and should be there to help out the less fortunate. Its not like 1909 when everyone was there to help out and be a friendly neighbor or friend. The one thing you should not have to worry about is that some ignorant jacka$$ is going to steal a wheelchair no matter who it belongs to. Its there because someone less fortunate then yourself needs it. They can’t walk on the 2 feet that you walk on. you should be fortunate that you have your health. To bad someone forgot to give you a heart and some compassion. I do agree that this woman needs to find a new place close to work on the first floor. There are agencies out there that will give her a portable ramp to make life a little easier on her as her son grows. I don’t care if a ramp for her comes from my tax dollars. I would rather my tax dollars go for things like that then ridiculous things it goes for now!!

To the scum that stole the chair. I hope the same misfortune comes to you 10 fold!!! Its scum like you that this world does not need!!!

Wow people are really heartless these days. 1st someone steals this boys wheel chair then people call her stupid. Do any of you have a special needs child? Do any of you have an idea what a wheel chair weighs? If she tried to get the wheel chair down the stairs with her child in it and he fell you would be calling her an idiot. If she took her son out 1st left him on the stairs and something happened to him you would call her an idiot. This woman is working, taking care of her son doing the best she can. She did not put this boy in some state run hospital for someone else to take care of him. Give her a break blame the heartless azz not this woman. Until you deal with what she does everyday try being a little more understanding and be thankful your children are healthy.
