Power troubles delay Northeast trains

NEWARK, N.J. - Power problems on Monday stalled trains between Washington and New York, causing rush-hour delays along the busy Northeast Corridor.

Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said a Philadelphia substation lost power at about 7:40 a.m. Monday. Service was restored about 40 minutes later.

It’s not known what caused the failure, and the railroad is investigating.

Amtrak trains experienced delays of up to about 45 minutes.

NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said trains were held at stations because there wasn’t enough electricity to move them. NJT riders endured delays of up to an hour.

Trains between New York and Boston were delayed when a power line fell on the tracks in Kingston.
