FITCHBURG, Mass.—Relief may be in sight for central Massachusetts residents who have been without electricity since a Dec. 12 ice storm.

Unitil Corp. said it expects to have most of the power restored by Tuesday.

The utility said Monday that its own crews were being assisted by National Grid crews in restoring power to more than 2,500 customers still in the dark in Fitchburg, Lunenburg, Ashby and Townsend.

Gov. Deval Patrick has asked state energy regulators to investigate why it took Unitil so long after the ice storm to get the lights back on. The governor and Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray spoke with senior Unitil executives over the weekend to demand swifter action.
