Published: October 1, 2009
PROVIDENCE—A Brown University poll shows Providence residents are worried about the economy and see their own financial prospects dimming.
The survey conducted from Sept. 16-19 showed 51 percent of those interviewed said they were doing worse off financially than before.
Respondents were bleak about the city’s prospects over the next five years, with 52 percent predicting widespread unemployment. Joblessness in Providence stood at 15.3 percent in August.
Providence Mayor David Cicilline registered a 41 percent approval rating. But 43 percent of those interviewed said Cicilline hasn’t lived up to his pledge to clean up City Hall corruption.
The poll was based on interviews with 480 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.
