REHOBOTH, Mass.—Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket reopened Friday night several hours after police sealed it off as they searched for a man wanted in connection with home invasion in Rehoboth.
Maj. Arthur Martins of the Pawtucket police said the standoff came to an end just before 6 p.m. when the man, John E. Keough, of 151 Cross St., Malden, Mass., agreed to drop his gun and be taken into custody.
Rehoboth police said a masked gunman invaded a home on School Street at about 3 p.m. The man tied up a woman with plastic cuffs and stole some money and a car.
Investigators said East Providence police spotted the car and chased the man to Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket, where he abandoned the car. Police negotiated with him for several hours until he surrendered calmly.
The woman in Rehoboth was able to free herself and call 911. She was not hurt.
It was not immediately known if the gunman and the victim knew each other.

Well, Lawn, judging from what, in my opinion, was an abundance of foolish behavior (shall we say stupidity?)on the part of civilians, I would guess that Smitty was there. Law enforcement is in the Kool-aid in my household, so when I see action like that, the best place is out of the way and let ‘em work! FYI, folks, when you see SWAT, go in the OPPOSITE direction.
alkeryia wow and holy crap!
glad to hear you are ok!
Um was smitty there? ![]()
I tried to take my kids to the park to play frisbee when we were turned away by the police and there were tons of police cars there. We knew something was up and on our way home saw the swat truck pass us in a small caravan of police vehicles. The kids thought a “burgler” was driving the truck b/c of the swat mask. It was kind of exciting for the kids and they wanted to search for the news online as soon as we got home. I am just glad we didn’t arrive a few hours earlier and get caught in the middle of it.
While traveling on Armistice Blvd, I found myself, inadvertently, in the middle of this. Trying to get out of the way of the onslaught of police units, I turned onto Alex McGregor Rd. Bad move, as that is where the police were heading. I couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. What amazed me was the number of civilians who couldn’t get CLOSE enough! I don’t think that Countryside has seen that much traffic in ages. Fortunately, no innocent bystanders, or police officers were injured. The criminal is in custody, the victim is safe. Good work to all law enforcement involved.
They should have let him shoot himself instead of wasting all that time & money.
We listen to the chase on our police scanner as it happen. The gun man ran from the car in the park to the river. You could hear East Providence chasing on foot telling him to drop the gun. He went into the river with the gun held to his head. Seekonk police enter the park form their side and help shut it down. They also shut down the bike path in that area. Pawtucket police set up a command center near the animal shelter in the park.
