FAIRHAVEN, Mass.—A New Bedford man faces kidnapping and assault charges after police said Wednesday he tried to abduct a 19-year-old Fairhaven woman.
Police said 26-year-old Stephen Wilson will be charged with kidnapping, assault and battery and assault with intent to rape. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in New Bedford District Court.
Police said Wilson was arrested at his home at about 6 p.m.
According to police, the victim was walking alone down the Fairhaven Bike Path near Egypt Lane at 11:55 a.m. when she was attacked by Wilson.
Police said the woman was able to break free and use her cell phone to call 911. The woman was shaken up but not seriously injured, police said.
Fairhaven police and Massachusetts State Police combed the area with search dogs and a helicopter looking for Wilson.
Police notified Fairhaven school officials and sent out a reverse 911 call to alert town residents.
