BELLINGHAM, Mass.—Two people have been killed when a pickup truck driving the wrong way on Interstate 495 in Bellingham hit a car head on.

State police said 41-year-old John Waterman of Worcester was driving his truck at a high speed north in the southbound lanes just after midnight Friday when he struck a car driven by 21-year-old Myja Parviainen of Westminster.

The truck ended up in the median where it caught fire.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not say why Waterman was driving on the wrong side of the highway. The crash remains under investigation.

The northbound lanes were closed for about 3 1/2 hours after the crash.
