Police: GPS has limitations in winter

WINDHAM, Vt.—Vermont State Police warned drivers to take care when following directions from global positioning systems after two Southern New England men ended up stuck on a snowmobile trail.

Police said Carlos Martins, 35, of East Providence, and Joseph Santos, 45, of Seekonk—traveling in separate vehicles—tried to use a GPS to reach a vacation home in Windham early Saturday morning.

The GPS put them on a series of remote back roads and both vehicles became stuck on a snowmobile trail. The two men called police.

Members of the Townshend Fire Department transported the men and their vehicles to the main road.

Police said a GPS may offer a short route to a destination, but they said the devices can also lead drivers into areas not maintained for winter travel.
