PROVIDENCE—State police said a Cranston store clerk tried to take an undercover trooper’s $1,000 winning lottery ticket and cash it for himself.
Authorities said John Barry, who works at the Diamond Fuel Gas Station, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. He has been released on personal recognizance.
Police said when an undercover state trooper presented Barry with a winning scratch ticket, Barry said it was not a winning ticket and threw it away.
Police arrested Barry when he attempted to cash the ticket at Rhode Island Lottery headquarters, where winning tickets valued at $599 or more must be redeemed.
A message left for Barry, 63, at the gas station wasn’t immediately returned. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 19 to determine his attorney.

I like the stores where the screen faces customer and shows what you have won. If a clerk cashes your ticket ask to see the slip that prints out on the lottery machine. That will have what the the prize was. You have a right to see this if they refuse tell them you will report them to lottery. If clerks says it’s not a winner tell them you want it back for tax purpose in case you hit big. Even if you sign your name on back of ticket clerk can still tell you prize was less than what you won. Ask to see the slip machine prints that is the only way you will know what the amount was.
A MESSAGE TO ROGUE CLERKS SENT TO JAIL FOR SCAMMING LOTTERY TICKETS:
Rumor has it you can gamble all you want behind bars for FREE. The rumor says there’s a card game similar to poker.
For the males, it’s called “poke-him” the version being “INMATES HOLD-EM”. For females, I think it’s just called poker..
Check your “non-scratch” tickets online @ (www.rilot.com)or (www.masslottery.com) before going to the outlet for validation. ALSO…sign in the appropriate place on the back of the ticket and NO ONE but you can cash it in. Turn in all rogue clerks!
At the place where I buy and check my tickets, the clerk always asks me if I want the ticket back. I usually have him throw it away, but I may change that practice.
I had a winning ticket once and the clerck said nothing. I said yes, I do have a winner. She then said the machine makes a mistake sometimes. I was going through a lot at the time and wrote a very poorly written letter to the lottery about it. Not long after this, the check your own numbers machine started showing up.
Also, I’ve had the sound play and been refused to have my ticket back or to see what it said I won. He just gave me a 1.00 and got very angry when I questioned how I knew this was the right amount.
The machine the clerk uses should have the amount of winnings available to the customer. This doesn’t stop the clerk from having a dud behind the counter that they scan instead of the one handed to them. The scanning machine should be in the customers view as well as showing where the ticket is being scanned for the customer to see and the amount. The clerk can hand back a bad ticket and scan your real ticket later.
I really wish I’d demanded my ticket from the man that only gave me a 1.00.
Also….All of the scaming could be avoided if the machine played the music for ALL winning tickets. When a ticket over $599 is scanned the machine makes the same sound as a losing ticket. (at least they did 10 years ago) pretty sure they still do.
I have had the opportunity to this scam back in the day. A guy came in with a winning power ball. he looked real quick and said “I matched the power ball number thats A buck” I scanned the the ticket. “claim at lottery headquarters” it says. I tell the guy he won $5000, ten minutes later he still does not belive me. Said he was going to come back and give me a cut…he never did!
HAPPENS ALL THE TIME…...SMARTEN UP PEOPLE, THE LOTTERY SHOULD REQUIRE THAT ALL TICKETS BE RETURNED TO THE CUSTOMER, WINNERS OR NOT!
i bet he wish that he was honest . and told the trouper he had to go to the lottery . it may cost him more than a 1000.00
