Officer in Mass. killed during traffic detail

WEYMOUTH, Mass.—A Weymouth police officer working a traffic detail has died after being struck by a pickup truck.

Norfolk District Attorney William Keating said Monday that Officer Michael Davey was pinned to a utility truck that was working in the intersection at Route 18 and West Street.

Keating said the driver who struck Davey had gone through a stop sign and hit another car before striking the officer just before 10 a.m.

Keating said that driver, 79-year-old Ronald Gale of Weymouth, has been cited with negligent motor vehicle homicide and other driving charges.

Keating said Davey, who leaves a wife and three children, was an Iraq war veteran and the son of a retired police officer.

Several recent fatal accidents involving elderly drivers have renewed calls for stronger driver testing in Massachusetts.

I can’t believe you people are arguing over a dumb comment about a cell phone that wasn’t even the issue in this unfortunate incident.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the Davey family.

My heart goes out to the officers family.  They are in our prayers. I do feel that mandatory driving test should be implemented for drivers after reaching a certain age.  The test should be repeated every year or two to hopefully deter this type of incident from happening.

It’s a fact that this officer was not on the cell phone. My heart goes out to his family. Now lets get off this officer and let him RIP. When there is an accident on a detail job it is because someone is not paying attention. That someone could be the driver, flagger, and police. In this case it was the driver! Cops are human they do use cell phones when they drive and when they are on detail…... i see it with my own eye…next time i will take a picture and forward it..

Trebron lighten up. Granted you said you did not know the details, but you still started going off on cell phones. The man was killed when someone ran a stop sign.
