PROVIDENCE—A high-ranking Rhode Island State Police official will be sworn in next week as the new U.S. marshal.

Lt. Col. Steven O’Donnell said he is retiring Friday after more than 23 years with the state police.

He will be sworn in next Thursday in Washington as the new U.S. marshal for the district of Rhode Island.

O’Donnell was recommended for the position in April by U.S. Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed, both Democrats. President Barack Obama nominated him for the post in August.
