NTSB to release report on fatal trolley crash

BOSTON - The National Transportation Safety Board is issuing its final report on last year’s MBTA Green Line trolley crash that killed a train operator.

The board has scheduled a hearing Tuesday in Washington to review the May 28, 2008, crash in Newton that killed Terrese Edmonds and injured five others.

About 200 other passengers avoided injury when a train operated by Edmonds slammed into the rear of a slow-moving trolley.

The crash came nearly a year before a second Green Line trolley collision in Boston that was blamed on an operator who was text messaging.

Both crashes prompted talk of an automatic braking system. But that talk has been muted since nine people died last month in the crash of a Washington Metro train running on automatic.
