NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.—A North Kingstown man is accused of shooting a town police officer with the officer’s service weapon and stealing his cruiser.
Police Chief Edward Charboneau said the officer had gone to the Wasp Road home of 29-year-old David Catalano at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday to notify Catalano that East Greenwich police had traced his plates to a fatal hit-and-run earlier in the day.
“As he went to leave, he was attacked by the suspect, wrestled with the suspect. The officer lost possession of his weapon,“ Charboneau said.
Charboneau said the officer was shot once or twice, but that he was wearing a bullet-proof vest. The officer, whose name has not been released, is recovering at Rhode Island Hospital.
The officer has been with the North Kingstown Police Department for about 7-and-a-half years, Charboneau said.

Charboneau said Catalano initially got into his own truck and circled the cul-de-sac once or twice before getting out and stealing the officer’s cruiser. The wounded officer ran after Catalano until he collapsed.
East Greenwich police caught Catalano without incident near Essex and Post roads. Investigators found the officer’s service gun on the center console.
Catalano is expected to be arraigned Monday. Charboneau said Catalano has been on suspended probation for disorderly conduct.
A law enforcement source told NBC 10 News that Catalano apparently struck a man who was putting air in his tire. Reportedly that man later died of his injuries.

Momof2: Really???? sorry I forgot to add an e at the end of applaud(e)!!!! I hope you would be so grammar correct when writing emotionally. It is hard to think while crying!!!! Get real, please??
to momof2—- REALLY??????? this is what you are here for????? c’mon, seriously! You can always choose not to read rather than criticize people on their grammer!!!
to everyone else—-my deepest apologies if any of my words are spelled incorrectly, I certainly do not mean to offend anyone, or worse….make you strain your brain trying to “decipher” what I am trying to say.
Why, if you care so passionately about an issue, would you not make sure, by using spell check, that everyone can understand why you are so passionate. Some of the comments left here, I can’t decipher because some of the words are spelled so poorly that I can’t even tell what they are supposed to be.
Momof2 is this English class? Its just some posting and I really don’t think anyone really cares about the exact spelling.
To Momof2: what does this have to do with these posts????
Please spell check your message before posting or just don’t post at all. Thanks!
browneyedgirl I agree 100% with your post regarding the media’s responsibility. It is poor! and you are right.
When this story first came out there wasn’t a mention of a fatality. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim and the police officer/victim. God bless
Yet again someone writing before getting the facts right!!! They changed the headline to this story this morning and it still is not accurate!!! My point and others on here was how poorly the media responded in accurately reporting this story!! I am very offended by the reaction of some of these posts. Knowing this kind and caring man who’s life was taken so abruptly I just want them to get it right!! The news never seems to get any story straight before writing about it!! They need to take responsibility and think about what they are printing before printing it.
To clear up 1 thing…..to everyone who keeps saying “where does it say someone was killed?“ That’s what FATAL means. A “fatal” hit & run means the person died. To the moron bashing the poor cop…..dude, grow up!
