PROVIDENCE—A new highway ramp in Providence will open next month as part of Rhode Island’s ongoing Iway transportation project.

The state Department of Transportation said Monday that the ramp from Interstate 95 south to Interstate 195 east will open to traffic on Dec. 6.

It will be located on the right-hand side of the highway. The current left-hand exit will close at the same time.

The new ramp is the next major phase of the Interstate 195 Relocation Project, an ongoing $610 million initiative that reconfigures highway traffic in and around downtown Providence.

Authorities said that they expect the changes to cause traffic backups, at least initially. They’re advising drivers to familiarize themselves with the new ramp.
