PROVIDENCE—A new highway ramp is opening next week as part of a major transportation project in Rhode Island.
The ramp from Interstate 95 North to Point Street in Providence is expected to open in time for the morning commute on Tuesday.
The highway work is being phased in over the week due to expected heavy rains.
On Thursday, state transportation officials plan to open a new ramp connecting Interstate 195 West to I-95 North. That’s the final major section of the I-195 relocation project, known as the I-Way.
Officials say the ramp could open a day earlier if the weather cooperates.

Suddenly, During Grand Opening of the I-WAY..KANYE WEST JUMPED IN FRONT OF THE GOVERNOR AND SAID..“THE “BIG DIG” IS A WAY BETTER PROJECT THAN THE I-WAY!!!“
commonsense38—since this is not a ramp off of 195, but off of 95, it probably won’t do diddly for the backups.
I just hope that this will help alleviate some of the traffic on 195 West that is backed up to at least the Seekonk exit every day (no matter what time of day, but especially terribile during morning and evening commutes). With a project of this magnitude, one would hope that this 195 West problem would be solved as well.
Yeah, thats the way they work—opening the roadways before they’re finished. Guess they figure to cover all the temporary lane markings with the new tar.
Heck of a way to run a railroad, ain’t it?
Guess you are correct site states they are 1/2 done - thought they were almost complete.
Why don’t you look a little closer at the description of the work on the website and on the other news stories. The final pavement still has to be put down in several areas. If it is obviously uneven by that much, that area still has to be completed.
I took the I way 195 west to 95 south for the first time on Friday. Why is it so rough, chattery, and bouncy on the roadway surface. Where the 195 west ramp ends onto 95 south there is a large dip / buckle in the road. Is re paving the roadway part of the billion dollar project, or are we going to have to spend a few mor million paving the crappy road surface????
