NEW BEFORD, Mass.—A New Bedford student brought a BB gun to Roosevelt Middle School on Wednesday, Superintendent Portia Bonner said.

School officials said they found the BB gun in a backpack in the student’s locker after another student told a staff member about it.

The student’s name was not released.

Bonner said the student was apprehended without incident and was being questioned.

“The child has not disclosed to us why they’ve done (what they did) and we are in the process of trying to notify the parents to make them aware of the situation,“ she said.

The case is now in the hands of New Bedford police.

School officials said they are pleased that students and faculty followed specific procedures that are in place for such a situation.

“Our motto here is ‘Where all kids succeed’. And one of the things under our mission is that we believe that in order to be a safe school everyone has to contribute to that. I can’t say enough that our students (Wednesday) contributed. If it wasn’t for our students informing us, this could have been a difficult situation,“ Bonner said.
