Narragansetts hold annual meeting on tribal land

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. – The Narragansett Indian Tribe is gathering on its land in Charlestown for an annual celebration dating back more than 300 years.
The two-day powwow starts Saturday.
The celebration includes a grand entry by the Narragansetts in traditional clothing, as well as performances of tribal songs and dance.
Tribal Medicine Man Lloyd Wilcox leads a peace pipe ceremony on Saturday.
Religious services are scheduled for Sunday in the historic Narragansett Indian Church. Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas, the tribe’s leader, will give a welcome address there.
