‘Tent City’ residents looking for permanent location

PROVIDENCE—About 80 squatters in Providence relocated their tent city, but were forced to move back to their original site because they set up camp on private property by mistake.

Police and state officials have told residents of “Camp Runamuck” to leave their camp under an old Interstate 195 bridge by South Water Street by Aug. 3.

The homeless group tried to move to Collier Point Park on Allens Avenue Friday night and Saturday, but the residents accidentally settled on land owned by Dominion Electric.

Providence police told the group it couldn’t be there, so it moved back to the bridge, which is to be torn down next year for the Iway project.

Members of the group say they’re scouting out possible new locations.

So Joyce…my boyfriend and I who have lived together for 7 years with our 5 year old daughter are just shacking up? haha What a total moron you are. Now to get more on point…I hope these people find a place.  It’s really a sad story.

Shacking up has nothing to do with this article.  It is just that Joyce2 is a friggen idiot with nothing better to do…Who the heck does she think she is?  Because YOU say it is shacking up, it is?  Gimme a break….think before you open your stupid mouth!

i do not make it to providence alot, the last time i was there i saw tent city for the first time in my life. very sad i thought. wanting to help as much as i could i parked and walked over to them to say hi. had a bag of cloths that i was going to give to a consignment store and handed it over to them. it just broke my heart to see what they had compared to what i have. while i was chatting and looking around i noticed several people there stoned out of their minds..smoking pot. made me think…..... they cant afford food, housing, cloths, and whatever, but no problem spending it on drugs. what is wrong with that picture.

What has all this talk about shacking up got to do with the homelessness and tent cities?  Providence - give these people a break and let them camp out somewhere decent!

And this has nothing to do with the story posted, so I’m sure that no one cares about our banter.  Enjoy the rest of what’s left of the weekend!

Well, then I’ve been “shacking up” for three years with joint bank accounts and possessions including leases and cars.  Just so I can wait until “the next one comes along….“
But thanks for being sort of a jerk.  That was pretty nice of you….
“When are you women going to learn…“  Clearly, we have.  By not just marrying someone just to get married and living with them first to make sure that we can stand them for the rest of our lives.  And if it doesn’t work out, it’s better to split the assets equally than to get a divorce.

Sorry, smoothoperator, but if you are not yet engaged, it is called “shacking up” with someone until the next one comes along.  No engagement, no commitment.  When will you women ever learn?

It’s too early in the morning for me to decide whether I should take offense or not, however, I will say this. My boyfriend and I live together, but aren’t yet engaged, however it is an unspoken rule that we must get married in a church due to family traditions.  I know, from a personal standpoint, that we both have very good jobs and still cannot afford a wedding right now, even a small one.  Times are tough and people are probably working toward paying off their debt, as we are, or in those in the case of tent city, working towards a place to live.  In my case, the commitment is there….the money is not.
Thank you for clarifying grin

My comment about common-law husbands and wives is get married already!!!  Make a commitment instead of “shacking up”.
