STEPHENS CITY, Va.—Authorities say a college student sought in the killing of a Massachusetts woman has been found dead at a Virginia hotel.

Worcester, Mass., District Attorney Joseph Early says 22-year-old Fitchburg State College student Alex Skowran had an off-and-on relationship with 23-year-old Giselle Rodriguez, found dead in her apartment Monday. Early said Tuesday an autopsy confirmed she was strangled. He said Skowran’s mother had called from Maryland to ask Massachusetts police to check on Rodriguez.

Officials say Skowran, originally from Pasadena, Md., had been ordered to stay away from Rodriguez in March.

Frederick County, Va., sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Cornwell said Skowran’s car was seen Monday night at a Stephens City hotel. When authorities tried to call Skowran, Cornwell says they heard what sounded like a gunshot and found him dead in the hotel room.
