Here the real scoop!

PROVIDENCE—A young man is in fair condition after trying to jump up onto the railing of an escalator at the Providence Place mall late Friday—and falling 20 feet to the ground.

Witnesses, including a friend waiting at the bottom of the escalator, told police that David Rosati was “messing around” on the escalator and leaping onto the railing, according to a police report.

Instead of sliding down, the 23-year-old man fell backward over the railing and plummeted to the first floor, said police Capt. James Desmarais.

Rosati, of 172 Oakland Ave., was unconscious when rescuers arrived and brought him to Rhode Island Hospital. Police said Rosati regained consciousness and was arguing with hospital staff before being hospitalized, according to a police report.

Over the past few years, at least three people have been injured or died in falls at the mall.

In November 2006, a Providence man leaped from the third-floor of the building and suffered a broken leg, arm and other injuries. Two months earlier, in September 2006, a 27-year-old man from Middlebury, Vermont leaped to his death from the mall parking garage.

In May 2004, a Massachusetts woman, 23, was seriously injured when she slipped off an escalator and fell backwards over its railing. She plunged two stories, about 40 feet, to the ground below.

The mall rises three stories and has a sub-level on each end. It also has a fourth-floor level near the food court that houses movie theaters and Dave & Buster’s, a restaurant and bar.

With reports from staff writer Amanda Milkovits.

That mall needs to build fencing. People are always falling there. You never hear about people falling in other malls.

Thanks, Miracle, as I wrote, I’ve only been there a few times and it’s been about 8 years since the last time.  I guess I don’t get around much!!

For Dave & Busters. That is the only one I know of that’s still open on the top floor. The movie place is up stairs also but it may be closed at that time.
