ATTLEBORO, Mass.—An Attleboro man was ordered held without bail Tuesday in the killing of a 62-year-old woman.
Aaron Carney, 30, was arraigned on a murder charge in Attleboro District Court.
Carney is accused of killing Elizabeth Fontaine in her Emory Street home. Prosecutors said she was shot once in the head.
Prosecutors said Carney was a friend of Fontaine’s son and that he had been living in her house off and on.
Kenneth Fontaine found his mother’s body Monday morning and called 911. Prosecutors said Carney called Kenneth Fontaine’s cell phone while they were interviewing him.
“Basically, Mr. Carney told Mr. Fontaine while the police listened in that he was sorry and he was asked by Mr. Fontaine why he did it. He was told he needed some money,“ prosecutor John Stapleton said.
Carney was arrested in Providence. Attleboro police recognized the incoming phone number as that of a pay phone in the lobby of the Providence Public Safety Complex, according to court papers.
The Bristol County district attorney said police found a shotgun in the trunk of a car that was reported stolen from Fontaine’s home.
Carney was arraigned Tuesday morning in Providence District Court on a charge of being a fugitive from justice. He waived extradition and was returned to Massachusetts to face the murder charge.
Carney is scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference on Nov. 6.
