PROVIDENCE— A North Providence man charged in a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured a 12-year-old girl was released after making bail.
Juan Aguirre, 67, appeared in Providence District Court on Tuesday on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, bodily injury resulting.
He was released after posting bail, which a judge set at $5,000 with surety. Aguirre did not enter a plea, and he had no comment as he left the courthouse.
Police said the victim was struck Sunday night while crossing a street at Manton Avenue and Unit Street in the Mount Pleasant section of the city. Police said the girl was walking when Aguirre hit her and kept going, never even applying his breaks.
The girl’s family came forward on Monday to confirm her identity, but her name has not been released because of her age. She remained in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
Police said a witness gave them a good description of the vehicle and the driver, which police then publicized. A North Providence letter carrier recognized the description and contacted Providence police, leading to Aguirre’s arrest.
Aguirre is scheduled for a Superior Court appearance in December.

My prayers go out to both of the families…We all do things that we regret and we need to learn from one another!!! God Bless!!
what strikes me is why hasnt anyone questioned the parents on why this 12 year old was out on the streets of providence that late at night and alone for that matter? why didnt they call police when she didnt come home and why it took 2 days to identify her? ..makes you wonder how these kids are being raised…....
My prayers and thought are with the little girl for a quick recovery. To the man (if you want to call him that) that hit her and drove away…. I hope you live every day thinking what you have done and you better be praying for her recovery…
