A felony charge has been filed against an Acushnet man accused of running over a mother duck in the Dartmouth Mall parking lot.

The Standard-Times reported that 25-year-old Joshua Linhares will be arraigned July 24 on charges of animal cruelty.

Police said a surveillance camera recorded Linhares running down the duck on June 13.

Witness said the man laughed as he left the scene.  Linhares said he did not see the duck and that it was an accident.

The mallard’s 12 ducklings were orphaned. The ducklings are being cared for by a Westport family until they can be released into the wild.
